Howard D. Rothbloom

Howard D. Rothbloom began practicing bankruptcy law in 1985. His practice areas include counseling individual and small business clients in debt related matters and the representation of clients in cases filed under Chapter 7, Chapter 13 and Small Business Chapter 11 of the Bankruptcy Code.

Mr. Rothbloom earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of Georgia in 1981 and a Law degree from the University of Georgia School of Law in 1984. He is admitted to, and has presented cases in, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia and the Eleventh Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals. He is a member of the State Bar of Georgia and the Atlanta Bar Association, and the Metro Atlanta Consumer Bankruptcy Group (MACBAG).  He is also a member of the Board of Advisors The Atlanta Legal Aid Society, Inc., Atlanta’s poverty law organization.

Mr. Rothbloom is respected for successfully handling complicated and challenging bankruptcy cases. He speaks at lawyer seminars. He maintians an AV Preeminent rating by Martindale-Hubble for Ethical Standards and Legal Ability.  In 2014, he was selected by his peers to receive the prestigious Louis C. Brown, Jr. Award by the Metro Atlanta Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys Group (MACBAG), a large organization of Atlanta lawyers practicing consumer bankruptcy law.  Each year, MACBAG's Board bestows the Award on a member of MACBAG who best exemplifies the highest standards of professionalism and who has made significant contributions to the practice of bankruptcy law in the Northern District of Georgia.  In 2015, Mr. Rothbloom was awarded the Volunteer of the Year Award by the Atlanta Legal Aid Society.

He has successfully prosecuted high-profile, class action lawsuits on behalf of Georgia homeowners against large banks and mortgage lenders to recover millions of dollars in damages and expose and stop widespread consumer lending abuses, including:

  • Winfred L. Wood, et al. vs. Associates Financial Life Insurance Company and Associates Financial Services of America, Inc., Superior Court of Cobb County, Georgia
  • Ralph C. Darden, et al. v. Ford Consumer Finance Company, Inc. and Associates Financial Life Insurance Company, Inc., U.S. District Court, Northern District of Georgia

Mr. Rothbloom's cases have attracted national media attention, including 60 Minutes, CBS Evening News with Dan Rather: Eye on America, NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw: Fleecing of America, ABC World News Tonight, Consumer Reports Magazine, and The Wall Street Journal.  Mr. Rothbloom’s work has been featured in two books Broke, USA: From Pawnshops to Poverty, Inc. – How the Working Poor Became Big Business by Gary Rivlin, and The Monster: How a Gang of Predatory Lenders and Wall Street Bankers Fleeced America – and Spawned a Global Crisis by Michael Hudson.
